AFRC vs Gaijins – 17-7 Well Done on a Close Game

Hey guys, match yesterday was a 7-17 win to the Gaijin, after they led
7-12 at half time.

I just wanted to say "otsukare-sama". I think the team did really well
in the face of what I made out as being about 30% possession. We were
good with the ball in hand keeping possession secure, and I thought
the AFRC defense was really admirable. Especially from the young kids,
everyone stood up and held the line tackling much bigger guys in the
gaijins and holding them out. Overall, given the conditions, I was
impressed that there were relatively few mistakes, and few penalties
throughout the game. In fact, AFRC was doing such a good job holding
gaijin out while only 5 points down that I really thought AFRC had a
chance to beat them with a good counter attack.

I think a couple of guys losing their discipline in the final quarter
led to our defensive pattern being broken, which cost the game. Nearly
everyone held their discipline and spirit until the end, but
unfortunately with defense, all players need to be 100% on the job. A
couple of guys seemed more interested in repeatedly trying to start
fights away from the ball rather than helping their mates keep up our
defensive line, and that is when Gaijin scored to seal the game.

Just some quick points:
– Only the captain should talk to the ref, and any questions or
comments should be respectful. Japanese refs will treat players and
teams that talk back more harshly.
– Don’t self judge. I believe good referees wait to see if any
strategic advantage can be won before blowing the whistle. If the
other side knocks on or is offside, that isn’t a time to take a rest,
it is a time to see if you can punish them – play 100% until the
whistle goes.
– Since some some guys wanted to hold a committee about this, let me
be clear: you cannot pull the halfback into a ruck when they are going
to pick up the ball. Also, never stand your ground arguing with the
referee about a penalty when play is restarting, especially if you
don’t know the rules.

On positive points – I thought our ruck offside lines were excellent,
everyone was getting back and keeping onside under a lot of pressure,
and the defensive line worked really well organizing itself to give no
gaps to the gaijins. Support play was also great, tackling was strong
and aggressive, and our guys showed good discipline and initiative at
the rucks, winning a number of good turnovers just from getting there
quicker than the gaijins.

Overall, it was a great game to watch and I thought our guys really
played above themselves. Keep it up – with a bit more discipline, I
think we could have won. Great job, I think all that training is
paying off and it was great to see you guys playing so well.

Cheers

Simon

But before anything else, the entire team played the game with a white armband to show his moral support to Dan in the terrible time he has to face.

After 19 players present at last Thursday’s training, it was 22 players who gathered together last Sunday under very hot temperature.

The opning of the score was long to happen. Dandelions’ attacks could not be completed as their number 8, grabbing the ball from behind his own scrum was regularly stopped by Arthur LECOURT and while 10-12 combinations who were destructive for our last autumn’s game, were annihilited by tough tackles from Damien and Ismaeh. On the side of the AFRC, the pack was very effective in particular, during the phases of maul. Note also that many attacks were subsequently aborted due to too many knock on from both sides.

After a drop-goal missed by Matthieu DERICKE, the score was opened at the 21st minute, after a serie of pick and go by the forwards and completed successfully by a powerful drive from Arthur LECOURT. Matthew DERICK converted it in a difficult position. At half time, the score was 7-0 and reflected fairly the domination of the AFRC.

The second half time saw the wind starting to blow, unfortunately, in favour of the Dandelions, which has enabled their fly half to kick up and under or kick pass toward our full back and wingers. But Takaki SANADA, our full back, saved several balls with sang froid. However, the AFRC took the opportunity to score again at the 41 mns. Following a superb ball taken by Hirotaka KOSHI on a line out at the 40metres of the Dandelions side, this one was quickly opened wide by Lolo then Damien, who made a skip pass to Ismaeh, spear like a cannonball. While the trial was still far from being scored, our second center successively kept away the two opposing centers, and then the back to finally resist well the cme back of their number 11 and score a superb try.Followed a sequence of shameful and bad organization of the AFRC, as no one could find out the kicking tee, forcing Matthieu Dericke to kick the conversion a l’ancienne and despite a position slightly to the left of opposing poles, therefore, more than feasible, it was missed, depriving us of two points which could have cost the victory.

The last part of the game showed the Dandelions more committed than never and their ability to open wide and on one of them, they were close to score a try but, unfortunately, their winger put a foot into touch. It is also true that the defense always aggressive but correct AFRC repulsed the attacks of their opponents until 5mns before the final whistle when on a superb combination of the Dandelions’backs, their hooker scored a try in between the posts. The try was converted and brought the score to12-7.

The last five minutes were terrible but the AFRC were able to keep the score at 12-7. And on a last line-out at 5 meters from their try line, they forced by their all time pressure, the Dandelions to commit a knock on which signed the end of the match and the start of a real feat since this was the first time in three years that the AFRC have succeeded to beat the Dandelions.

Note that the regular structured trainings set up by Matthieu ROSENBERG and Bruno LEROY pay more regularly as, after the historic victory on Baby gaijin, the AFRC has won against another strong team. The team is created in these moments,, moments of joy deserved some time spent to repeat how to defend, how to form ruck and mauls, how to attack. Therefore, please come to Shin Okubo every Thursday from 7PM for a new workout that will affirm our game

Ismaeh devenant meme notre Monsieur "un essai par match" (US Navy, No side, Dandelions).
The best players of AFRC were: Arthur LECOURT and Ismaeh who, besides their respective try, were heroic in defense.Ismaeh has even become our "one try per game" (U.S. Navy, no side, Dandelions). A distinction to the pack for his good technique and powerful drive in scrum and maul and his real progress in ruck, to Damien Marty for its beautiful animation of the back line. And above all, a strong and superb defense that kept our try line inviolated for almost the entire match. The key of the victory was probably here.

Bruno.
